My parents used to live in Onalaska Texas. It seemed they were a million miles from civilization when they were actually only 30-45 minutes from stores and medical facilities. My mom was diagnosed with Parkinson Disease many years ago and my dad has his own health issues with heart and diabetes concerns. In May of 2023 they came to visit me in Tuscaloosa to look for possible housing situations to move them closer to me, so that I could be around to help them with whatever they needed. We found an independent living home for them, and it was decided they would make the move to Tuscaloosa in June of 2023. I was going to take the time off work and drive over to Texas to help them pack and make the move. 2 weeks later I got a call that my mom was in ICU and unable to swallow. I make the 10 hour drive to Texas. My mom spent 2 weeks in the hospital and then 2 more weeks in a rehab facility. Pushing their move back a bit but they finally made the move at the end of July 2023 and became residents of Tuscaloosa Alabama.
The move was hard for them and not just the drive. We had to find primary care providers, transfer insurances, medication delivery changes, among other things. But it was all worth it.
